The first edition of “Advanced Soaring Made Easy” was compiled with a variety of goals in mind. However, it was mainly intended to encourage enthusiastic newcomers to carry on as soaring pilots and hence improve member retention in our sport. Too many pilots give up after reaching solo status or remain mere circuit pilots. Even after a few successful solo flights they are still far away from realising their full potential.
Positive feedback from pilots all over the globe - often accompanied by a wish list for additional topics - and various suggestions from some of the world’s leading pilots have resulted in substantial additions. The topics already discussed in the first edition were significantly extended and much new content was added. In particular, performance-orientated pilots will notice a greater focus on competition soaring including the all-important psychological aspects. Adding a chapter on technical issues and placing a greater emphasis on modern navigation systems, including electronic flight analysis, has resulted in an all-encompassing work for generations of glider pilots to come.
A great glider pilot once said: “Gliding is the art of understanding the relationship between sun, wind and terrain”. Although this might sound too simplistic it is in essence what this book is all about. Written in plain language it aims to help others discover the true fascination of gliding. For some this fascination is the fun of silent flight, while for others it is long journeys of airborne discovery in total comfort. A glider pilot’s greatest reward is a constantly changing impression of our beautiful Mother Earth. We are among a privileged few when we become mountaineers on wings surrounded by otherwise inaccessible snow-covered mountains in places like New Zealand, Japan or Europe. Just as impressive is soaring high over the red earth of sunburnt central Australia and western USA. But whatever the case may be; the peaceful bird’s eye view of nature, or a close look at the most spectacular cloud formations in the atmosphere, these are privileges glider pilots will forever treasure and protect.
Gliding is a sport, but it is more than that – it is an absorbing passion difficult to express in words. Therefore the author lets cameras speak and allows readers to experience the third dimension often from quite unusual perspectives. The author’s own pictures of memorable gliding expeditions – frequently taken in some of the most inhospitable parts of Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand – were supplemented by spectacular shots from almost all other corners of the globe. They reflect the attraction of the sport in an impressive way and will hopefully stimulate interest and curiosity to the newcomer but at the same time provide support, encouragement and background knowledge to already addicted members of the gliding fraternity. Successful glider pilots have managed to transform theoretical knowledge into superior practical skills but even inexperienced pilots can achieve success without major setbacks and disappointments on the way by implementing the information in this book.
